A life raft is a non-self-propelled vessel for life saving on a ship, which is mainly used for evacuating a ship in distress in an emergency at sea.
Life rafts can be divided into rigid life rafts and inflatable life rafts according to their structural forms. The main structure of the rigid liferaft is usually made of rigid materials, such as galvanized iron sheet, aluminum alloy plate, stainless steel plate or hard plastic materials. Inflatable life rafts are made of rubber and nylon cloth as the main materials.
The life raft is equipped with a certain amount of food and fresh water for the occupants to use while drifting at sea. The raft is also equipped with cold protection facilities, life-saving compressed rations, medicines and firework life-saving signals.
The life raft is usually packed in the glass steel storage cylinder and installed on the special raft rack on the side of the ship. When an emergency occurs, the life raft can be thrown directly into the water, and it will automatically inflate and form for people in distress to ride.
If the ship sinks too fast to throw the life raft into the water, when the ship sinks to a certain depth of water, the hydrostatic pressure release device on the life raft will automatically dishook and release the life raft.
