Marine Air Compressor Maintenance
Marine air compressors are used to start large slow and medium speed Marine diesel engines and are therefore an integral part of a ship's engine room.
In general, there are two compressors on board (more than two may be available depending on the requirements of the ship). The two compressors are filled with air receivers, and the total capacity of the air receivers should enable the engine to start back and forth 12 times without replenishing the receivers. If it is a one-way engine, this capacity is limited to 6 times.
Each tank is equipped with a safety valve that limits pressure rise to less than 10% of the tank's maximum design pressure.
Marine air compressor maintenance generally includes the following items:
- Check and adjust collision clearance
- Check basic threaded connections
- Replace the air filter element
- Oil change
- Clean the oil filter
- Check the check valve
- Install replacement valve
- Check and maintain cylinder liner, cooling jacket and piston
- lube
