Air compressors are widely used in almost all industries and household needs. In the maritime industry, air compressors are also used to supply important equipment or different systems. They can be used for many processes, from the small process of cleaning filters to larger and critical tasks such as starting the main and auxiliary engines.
Reciprocating air compressors are widely used on ships. The reciprocating air compressor consists of a piston, connecting rod, crankshaft, piston pin, suction valve and exhaust valve.
The pistons are connected to the lower and higher sides of the suction and discharge lines. The crankshaft spins, the crankshaft spins, the piston spins. The downward moving piston reduces the pressure in the master cylinder, and the pressure difference will open the suction valve.
The rotating crankshaft lowers the piston and fills the cylinder with low pressure air. Now the piston is moving upward and back, and this upward movement begins to build up pressure and close the suction valve.
When the air is pressurized to its specific value, the discharge valve opens and the pressurized air begins to pass through the discharge line and be stored in the air bottle.
The compressed air in the cylinders can then be used to run the main and auxiliary engines. Single and double acting reciprocating air compressors are available on board.
