What Is A Gear Pump?
Gear pump is a positive displacement rotary pump. Gear pumps work by relying on the volume change between a pair of meshing gears to transport the liquid or pressurize the liquid. When the driving gear rotates, the driven gear rotates together to form a sealed chamber. On the suction side, the volume of the sealing chamber gradually increases, and the liquid is sucked into the pump; On the discharge side, the volume of the sealed chamber is gradually reduced to discharge the liquid out of the pump.
When the drive gear rotates, the side of the gear that is out of engagement forms a low pressure area, which draws the liquid into the pump. With the rotation of the gear, the liquid is brought to the other side of the gear pump, at which time the liquid is squeezed and discharged into the pipe. At the same time, the continuous flow of liquid is maintained through the meshing and rotation of the two gears.
The advantages of gear pump include simple structure, compact, convenient manufacture, cheap price, strong self-priming ability and so on. Its disadvantages include large fluctuations in conveying flow and pressure, easy wear, and large noise. Therefore, regular inspection and maintenance are required when in use to maintain good working condition.
Almost all types of ships need to use gear pumps, because gear pumps are widely used in the Marine industry, mainly for conveying lubricating oil and other media. In large passenger ships, freighters and other ships, oil tankers, chemical tankers, liquefied gas ships, gear pumps are usually installed in the engine room area, through the lubrication system to transport lubricating oil to all parts of the ship, to provide lubrication for mechanical equipment. At the same time, in some ships, multiple gear pumps will be combined into a lubricating oil pump group to improve the efficiency and safety of oil supply.
