What Is A Storm Valve?
The storm valve is a swing check valve with a closing device. The closing device is usually a hand wheel, but can also be actuated.
The storm valve can be installed in the sanitary plumbing system of the ship, the storm valve is usually installed in the sanitary plumbing system of the ship, which has a side outlet. They prevent seawater from entering the system during rough waves. It can also be installed on the deck and can be closed to prevent water from entering through openings such as vents, pipes or hatches. This helps prevent the vessel from taking on water and potentially causing damage or instability.
The storm valve has two openings where fluid flows in through the inlet and out through the outlet. The valve has a flap inside which is connected to a counterweight and a locking block. A locking block is a valve component controlled and operated by an external hand wheel or actuator. The purpose of the locking block is to hold the clamshell in place and ultimately prevent fluid flow.
Once the process begins, the operator must choose whether to open the lock block or keep it closed. If the lock block is closed, the fluid will remain outside the valve. If the operator opens the locking block, fluid can flow freely through the clamshell. The pressure of the fluid releases the disc, causing it to flow through the outlet in one direction. When the flow stops, the baffle automatically returns to its closed position.
Regardless of whether the lock block is in place, if the fluid flows out of the outlet, the backflow will not be able to enter the valve due to the counterweight. This function is the same as a check valve and prevents backflow so as not to contaminate the system. When the handle is lowered, the locking block will again hold the clamshell in its closed position. If necessary, the fixed flap can isolate the pipe for maintenance.
