Classification societies (or survey societies sometimes collectively referred to as survey bodies) are bodies that establish and maintain technical standards related to the construction and operation of ships and offshore facilities. It's usually a civil society organization. Founding members include ABS, BV, DNV, GL, LR, NK, RINA, RS.
American Bureau of Shipping (ABS)
Founded in 1760, it is one of the first international classification societies named after Lloyd. Lloyd's Register of Shipping began and gradually developed into a social public welfare institution to protect the safety of ships and life and property at sea.
Founded in 1828, headquartered in Paris, France, is one of the 12 full members of the International Association of Classification Societies, one of the world's leading inspection and certification groups.
Det Norske Veritas Germannischer Lloyd (DNV GL)
Founded in 1864, DNV today operates in more than 100 countries, with experts dedicated to serving our customers for a safer, smarter and greener future. In 2012, it announced a formal merger with the German Lloyd's Register (GL), another founding member of IACS.

Italian Maritime Registry (Registro Italiano Navale, RINA)
Founded in 1861 in Genoa, by a group of shipowners and Marine insurers initiated the establishment of more than 150 years of history, is one of the world's oldest classification societies, is also one of the founders of the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS).
Founded in 1899, it is headquartered in Tokyo, Japan. The Association is a non-profit organization established to protect the lives and property of Marine vessels and their occupants, and to prevent pollution of the Marine environment.
Founded in 1960, it joined the International Association of Classification Societies (IACS) in 1988, and was included in the class terms by the London Insurance Business Association in 1990, enjoying premium concessions.
